Insects

Brown Planthopper

High population of planthoppers cause leaves to initially turn orange-yellow before becoming brown and dry and this is a condition called hopperburn that kills the plant. BPH can also transmit Rice Ragged Stunt and Rice Grassy Stunt diseases. Neither disease can be cured.

Green Leafhopper

Green Leafhopper refers to various species of leafhoppers (family Cicadellidae), with the Nephotettix spp. being particularly notable in agriculture. These insects are small, slender, and typically bright green, measuring about 3-5 mm in length. They are known for their jumping abilities and quick movement. Green leafhoppers are pests that damage plants by: -Feeding on plant sap using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, which weakens the plant. -Transmitting plant diseases such as Rice Tungro Virus and other viral and bacterial pathogens. They primarily affect crops like: -Rice (most common) -Grains and cereals -Grasses Life Cycle -Eggs are laid in plant tissue, and they hatch within 4-9 days. -Nymphs (immature stages) resemble adults but are smaller and wingless. -Adults live for about 30-60 days, and they complete their life cycle in around 3-4 weeks. Symptoms of Damage -Yellowing of leaves -Stunted growth of plants -Infected plants may develop zigzag patterns on leaves (if transmitting a virus) -In severe infestations, crops may show signs of wilting or dieback

Rice Black Bug

Rice Black Bug (Scotinophara spp.) is a shiny, black or dark brown insect measuring 7-10 mm long. It is nocturnal and primarily damages rice crops by sucking sap from the stems and grains. Infestations are most common during the reproductive to ripening stages of rice. Damage Symptoms -Dead hearts (drying of central shoots) in younger plants -Bug burn (yellow to brown patches) on leaves and stems -Empty or shriveled grains -Plants become weak and prone to lodging (falling over)

Rice Bug

Rice Bug (Leptocorisa spp.), also known as the Rice Stink Bug, is a slender, brownish-green insect about 15-20 mm long. It emits a foul odor when disturbed. Rice bugs primarily damage crops during the milky to dough stages by piercing grains and feeding on the sap. Damage Symptoms -Empty or partially filled grains -Discolored grains (brown spots) -Grains become shrivelled or deformed -Reduced grain quality and yield

Stem borer

Stemborers are major rice pests, primarily from the genera Scirpophaga and Chilo. The most common types are: -Yellow Stemborer (Scirpophaga incertulas) -Striped Stemborer (Chilo suppressalis) These pests are moth larvae (caterpillars) that bore into rice stems. Adult moths are small, with wingspans of 20-30 mm. The larvae are whitish with brown heads and can grow up to 20 mm. Damage Symptoms -Dead hearts: Central shoot dries up in the vegetative stage. -Whiteheads: Empty, whitish panicles in the reproductive stage. -Hollowed stems: Damaged stems become hollow due to larval feeding. -Reduced grain yield and poor plant growth.
